LINX Update - Web Services and Data Dashboard

There has been a lot of discussion on the forums about how to add a user interface to your LabVIEW application running on BeagleBone Black or Raspberry Pi. While LINX 3.0 supports low level communication protocols like TCP and UDP on BBB and RPI there is still a lot of work required to build a GUI on top of these protocols.

I'm happy to announce that we've posted a LINX 3.0 target side update that adds support for LabVIEW Web Services and Data Dashboard making both local and remote GUI's a whole lot easier.

Check out my blog post announcing the update for more details.

What about remote front panels? The remote front panel works just fine when connecting from the LabVIEW project. But when I try to connect from the LabVIEW main menu after disconnecting at the project level, the connection is refused by the server. I was sure to enable the web server and make sure all VI's are accessible to all users in the security configuration, but the remote FP server refuses connections unless you connect to the target in the project explorer. Remote front panels are great for most targets, and much superior to web services and data dashboard, in my opinion. There is a method in the VI server App class for launching a remote FP that works great with LabVIEW Runtime. So if you have LV runtime installed on a PC, you can develop a small launcher app that will open a remote FP to your RPi. It works great with other RT targets. Is there some way to get it working with the RPi that I am missing? Thanks.

Hi smarlow,

Remote front panels are not supported on BBB and RPi2 targets at this time. We focused are efforts on getting LV Web Services working since they don't require browser plug-ins.

I agree with your decision to focus on web services, so that users can connect with tablets and phones. But for users who want to connect with a PC or laptop, the remote FP is far superior, as it allows interactive control, is WYSIWYG, and requires no extra programming. Also, you do not need a browser or plugin to connect to a remote front panel from a PC. All you need is the LabVIEW run time engine. The LabVIEW RTE will launch its own remote FP window if you call the "Remote Panel.Open Connection to Server" method of the VI Server app class.

Aren't remote front panels supported already, in a way? The remote front panel works fine when running a VI on the target in the LabVIEW IDE. It seems like it just needs to be turned on. -SM

For posterity, here's a post that includes some technical details and a silly example app for our LV Web Services implementation.
